How To Get The Most From Your Self-Tanner

Summer is in full swing, which means one thing: it's time to get that golden tan. Sure you can go to the beach, catch some rays, and get great color. The other option? Put on your self-tanner of choice and get the same result.

For all of you girls and guys who love to sprinkle on a little self-tanner, you know that one of the most important things for getting the most out of your product is to prep your skin. This is key for smooth and streak-free results. As frustrating as it may be, self-tanners tend to leave some streaks or unintended splotches on your skin. With just a few minutes of preparation and consideration, this is never the case!

Find out how to get the most from your self-tanner with these easy tips.

1. Exfoliate.

Exfoliation is your friend. It helps you get a more even, smooth application and prevents streaking by removing the dead skin cells that can cling to your legs and arms. You can exfoliate before or after applying self-tanner, but I recommend doing it beforehand so you don't accidentally rub any of your tanners off onto the towel when you're drying yourself off after showering—which would be a recipe for disaster!

The best method for effective elbow-to-toe exfoliation is by using an old toothbrush to scrub away dead skin cells. Just wet the brush under warm water, then lightly scrub over all areas of skin that need attention (the soles of feet included). Afterward, use a body lotion or oil to moisturize and make sure everything feels soft as silk before moving on with the rest of your routine.

2. Use a hydrating, non-staining, streak-free self-tanner.

3. Apply self-tanner to your legs in sections, from top to bottom.

To get the most longevity out of your self-tanning product, it's best to apply it in sections. Start at the top of your leg and work your way down, avoiding applying self-tanner to your ankles. Then turn around and do the same thing on the other side.

You shouldn't forget about your hands when applying self-tanner! Like it or not, we use our hands every day and they tend to show signs of wear quicker than other body parts—this is why you should always make sure that you're wearing gloves when washing dishes or cleaning the house. It will help protect them from turning into wrinkled leather gloves prematurely!

4. Wear gloves when applying self-tanner to your hands.

While self-tanner is great for your face, hands are a different story. The skin on our hands is particularly sensitive, so it's best to treat them with kid gloves when applying self-tanner.

First of all, you can wear gloves to prevent staining. While there are some products that don't stain as much as others, no matter what brand you choose to use, there's always a chance that your hands could wind up looking like they've been dipped in chocolate milk after getting a little too much sun. Wearing gloves will help keep that from happening!

Secondly, wearing gloves will help prevent the product from rubbing off on your fingers and palms while you're applying it over other parts of your body. This makes sense because if the stuff gets on your fingers by accident while applying it somewhere else then it'll probably rub off onto whatever else those fingers touch afterward—like say...your clothes!

5. Clean up messes as you go along for a more even tan.

While self-tanning, you may have some spills or splatters. If this happens, clean up the messes as you go along for a more even tan.

Use a damp paper towel to wipe away any excess lotion on your skin and in your hairline, especially around drier areas like elbows and knees. Don’t worry about getting it all because it will fade during your showering process anyway! You can also use a tanning mitt to avoid staining your hands while applying the product—the mitt will help get rid of residue easily without causing any smears on surrounding surfaces (like when using a pumice stone). Afterward, throw out that dirty sheet and replace it with another one so there aren't any leftover spots before washing away whatever doesn't come off naturally through the next few hours after application!

6. Try using moisturizing lotion as you apply self-tanner.

If you're using a product that's specifically designed to fade away gradually, it can be helpful to apply an extra layer of a moisturizing lotion that has the same scent as your self-tanner. This will help blend the two together and make them seem like a more natural shade of color rather than two separate products applied at different times. It'll also help even out any spots where one may be too dark compared to another.

7. Avoid doing too many activities after applying self-tanner.

You should avoid doing too many activities after applying a self-tanner. Strenuous activity is particularly bad for your skin, as it can cause the color to fade or streak. Avoid using saunas and hot tubs, showering (and sexual contact) for a few hours after you apply self-tanner, swimming for 24 hours, sunbathing for at least 48 hours, tanning beds/sprays/oils, etc., as this will all make your tan fade quicker.

It's easy to get caught up in trends, but when it comes to self-tanning, it's important that you do your research first. Apply products slowly and meticulously, being sure to rub them into your desired area until it disappears. Be especially careful with your hands, feet, knees, and elbows. If done correctly, a good self-tanner can give you the look that you've always wanted.
