How to Get Rid of Stretch Marks

Stretch marks can be one of the most frustrating skin problems because a lot of people deal with them at some point in their lives. An estimate of 90% of women who are or have been pregnant, 70% of adolescent females and 40% of adolescent males have stretch marks.

Now the question is: what really works for these unsightly skin concerns? Let’s find out.

What are Stretch Marks?

When your skin is abnormally stretched and expanded for a certain time period, stretch marks start to appear. The appearance of stretch marks occur during pregnancy, weight gain, weight loss, or during periods of rapid growth, like in puberty. When the skin is abnormally stretched, this causes the skin’s collagen and elastin structure to break. What you see as the curled ends of stretch marks are actually elastin bands that have broken.

To make it simpler, stretch marks are scars that have formed from the inner layer of your skin. This is what makes it different from scarring – which occurs when skin is wounded from the outside. This is exactly why scar-removing treatments almost never work for stretch marks, because these two skin problems are not the same. It should also be noted that there are no known cosmetic ingredients of products that can make a difference in the appearance of stretch marks.

A lot of people used skin care products such as Vitamin E, cocoa butter, shea butter and other topical skin care creams, but results vary from person to person. Most of these products simply minimize or lighten the appearance of stretch marks.

Microdermabrasion can help improve the appearance of red to purple-colored stretchmarks over time. When you exfoliate through natural microdermabrasion creams, or undergo microdermabrasion procedures can make a difference in these unsightly marks. Some people also go for peeling procedures to hasten the effects of stretch mark healing. But one thing’s for sure. Any topical treatment could work — but they can only improve the appearance of stretch marks. They cannot be totally eliminated unless surgical interventions and laser treatments are performed on you. That’s the thing about stretch marks – once they’re there, they’re there forever.

The best thing to do against stretch marks is to prevent them from happening to you. Make sure to drink a lot of water to keep your skin hydrated. Exfoliate using an effective natural agent to unveil a younger and healthier-looking skin. And, don’t forget to keep your skin moisturized using a deep-penetrating body cream.
